Hi there—and thank you for stopping by! I’m Risto, a designer from Finland, currently living in Tokyo ^-^ Since 2023, I work at Fontworks, where I design and produce original Latin typefaces—both library fonts and custom ones—and give feedback to my Japanese colleagues on Latin type and rōmaji sets. I’ve had two mentors in Tokyo: Joachim Müller-Lancé, for Latin and the Japanese writing system in general, and Akira Kobayashi, for the fundamentals of kanji. Previously, I attended the

master of design

program, Type and Media, at the

royal academy of art, the hague

in The Netherlands; assisted in the production of Rizoma for R-Typography and ABC Maxi for Dinamo; and received a

ba in graphic design

from the same art academy in The Hague. For my graduation work at Type and Media I drew Arctica—a type family that plays with the tension between high contrast and brutalism. I've also worn a different hat as an urban planning consultant, helping create more bicycle-friendly cities. I earned a

master of science

in

transportation engineering

and

urban planning

at

aalto university

in Finland. Outside of type, I make music, do power yoga, enjoy Japanese food (a lot), go bouldering now and then, and yes—I check my email regularly. Feel free to get in touch, or just say hi!
