Hi there, and thanks for stopping by! I’m Risto, a designer from Finland, now based in Helsinki. I work independently, providing type design, wordmark and graphic design, as well as typographic consultation for type foundries and a variety of clients. The foundries I collaborate with include Grilli Type, Helsinki Type Studio, Dinamo, and R‑Typography, among others.
After graduating from the Master of Design programme, Type and Media at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague, in the Netherlands in 2022, I moved to Tokyo to work at Fontworks. There, I designed and produced original Latin typefaces, both library and custom, and provided feedback on Latin and rōmaji sets created by my Japanese colleagues. I also drew kanji for the digital interpretation of the Tsukuji Nigo Mincho metal type family, which will be out soon.
At Type and Media, I designed Arctica. I hold a ba in Graphic Design from the same academy in The Hague. I also completed an msc in Transport Engineering and Urban Planning at Aalto University in Finland. I have an unreasonable admiration for Tokyo’s monorails.
Beyond work, I make music, do yoga, enjoy Japanese food (a lot), and go bouldering now and then. And yes, I check my email regularly. Feel free to get in touch, or just say hi!
